Collagen has been one of the hottest supplements this year, and with a multitude of benefits all over the body, we can see why… Now, with the arrival of an exciting new vegan collagen to our shelves, we wanted to give you the low down on collagen, Vollagen and the potential uses and benefits.
What is collagen and what does it do?
Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body, and is used to synthesise connective tissue found in the bones, skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and blood vessel walls, making these tissues strong, resilient and elastic. Hence, smooth skin, strong nails, joints and bones. Sounds good right?!
Well, unfortunately for us, collagen production declines with age – starting at the age of 25, so that by the age of 50, collagen levels are typically reduced by around 50%. Eek.
As a result, collagen supplementation has become very popular, providing the raw materials to maintain and enhance connective tissue in the body.
Where does collagen come from?
Typically, collagen comes from animal sources. Some collagen is from marine sources (fish), and much of it is from animal products such as beef. In the store, we stock Planet Paleo Collagen, which is made from either pasture-reared cattle, or sustainably-sourced Ling fish.
But for those who don’t want to consume animal products, collagen proves problematic, as it is animal-derived by nature. Most ‘vegan collagens’ on the market only provide the ingredients for us to make collagen in our bodies, rather than the amino acids themselves.
Enter Terranova’s new vegan collagen (Vollagen) products!
Lucky for us, Terranova has developed a new vegan collagen alternative – Vollagen. Made from fermented corn, Vollagen is composed of the same 18 amino acids as human collagen, in the same levels and ratios, but without containing any animal products. Each product is also enhanced with unique blends of botanicals and whole foods to support skin, hair, nails and joint health.
